An ESDS can remotely shut down all components on a plant via portable hand held radios. Hand held radios have a designated shut down button located on the radio and remote speaker microphone that when pressed sends a signal to a dedicated base station (usually located in the control tower) that engages the emergency stop which intern shuts the plant down.

This ESD signal overrides any communication signals present on all other radios and immediately engages the ESDS system.
